The Descale Service is performed to remove accumulated marine growth, rust, calcium and mineral deposits from the internal water passages.
The service is done by removing the thermostats and lower unit and pumping a Rydlyme Solution up through the water pickup tube. The solution will flow through the power head and cooling passages breaking down any deposits and allowing better water flow.
The solution should be run through the engine for 2 - 4 hours depending on the build up. When complete, the outboard is flushed with fresh water and reassembled.
When to Descale?
The service is recommended when water is not flowing freely from the engine telltale. This indicates that there is a blockage somewhere in the cooling system. If the blockage cannot be cleared by simply pushing mono in the telltale, then a Descale Service may be needed. If the blockage is not cleared it could lead to costly repairs due to overheating.
This service is also recommended when an outboard is overheating and it is not caused by a worn water pump.
This service is also a great option when combined with the Outboard Diagnostic Survey when purchasing a used boat or outboard. This combination of services will give a good baseline for future 100, 300 hour services and is a great preventative maintenance step.
